The Travis Country house sits on a sloped lot overlooking the greenbelt, with treetop views from the living room and main bedroom suite. The owners purchased the home with goals to maximize the treehouse feel of the main bedroom and to create open, daylit living spaces suited for friend and family gatherings.

Built in 1973, the home felt segmented and dimly lit. Interior walls dividing the kitchen, dining, and living room were removed to create an open floor plan downstairs. Large sliding doors were added across the back of the living room, windows were expanded to bring in natural light, and hallways throughout the home were widened. Upstairs, space was created for a laundry room. Large windows overlooking the trees were added to the main bedroom, and the bathroom layout was simplified to create a single, light-filled space.

An existing ‘70s southwest vibe provided inspiration for the new design direction. Saltillo tile already present in the dining and living room was expanded into the kitchen space and ties in with a new breeze block wall at the level change between the dining and living spaces. Complementary greens were brought in with ceramic light fixtures, painted stair treads, and a built-in bar. Soft white wall finishes were key to playing up these details and provide a backdrop for the owner’s furnishings. The combination of minimal, modern finishes and heirloom antiques create a warm and subtly modern home.
